- Start with a "try-a-tri" or sprint. A sprint is usually a 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run.
- You need less gear than you think: goggles, a bike that works, a helmet and running shoes.
- In Ontario you'll need a Triathlon Ontario membership or a one-day licence, usually added when you register.
- 12 weeks at 3–5 hours a week gets most healthy adults ready for a sprint.
- Practise in open water before race day. It's the part that surprises most first-timers.
Triathlon distances
| Distance | Swim | Bike | Run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Try-a-tri | Shorter than a sprint, varies by race. Built for first-timers. | ||
| Sprint | 750 m | 20 km | 5 km |
| Olympic | 1.5 km | 40 km | 10 km |
| 70.3 | 1.9 km | 90 km | 21.1 km |
| Ironman | 3.8 km | 180 km | 42.2 km |
Exact distances vary a little from course to course, so check your race's athlete guide. For a first race, a try-a-tri or sprint is the sweet spot: long enough to feel like a real achievement, short enough to enjoy.
The gear you need
Must-haves
- Swimsuit or trisuit (a trisuit lets you swim, bike and run in one outfit)
- Goggles you've already trained in
- A bike in good working order. Any road, hybrid or mountain bike is fine for a first race.
- A certified bike helmet. It's mandatory, and you'll be checked going into transition.
- Running shoes, ideally with elastic laces to save time
Nice to have
- A wetsuit. Ontario lakes can be cold early in the season, and a wetsuit adds warmth and buoyancy. Renting is a great option for your first race.
- A race belt for your number
- Sunglasses, a hat and a towel to mark your spot in transition
Don't buy a triathlon bike for your first race. Spend that money on a bike fit and some coaching instead. You'll go faster for less.
Picking your race
Ontario has one of the busiest triathlon calendars in Canada, with races most weekends from June to September. A few tips for choosing:
- Pick a beginner-friendly format. Series like MultiSport Canada run races across the province with "Give It A Tri" and sprint options built for first-timers.
- Choose a race 12+ weeks away so you have time to prepare without rushing.
- Mid-summer races have warmer water, which makes the swim much friendlier.
- Close to home is easier. No hotel, no long drive, your own breakfast.
When you register you'll also need a Triathlon Ontario annual membership or a one-day licence for that race. It's usually a quick add-on in the registration form. Check the race's own site for current dates, distances and fees.
A 12-week sprint plan
Three to five hours a week is enough for most healthy adults. Aim for two swims, two rides and two runs a week. Some can be short.
| Weeks | Focus | Example week |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Build the habit | 2 × 30 min swim (technique, rest whenever you need) · 2 × 45 min easy ride · 2 × 20–25 min run-walk |
| 5–8 | Build endurance | Swim 400–600 m continuously · 60–75 min ride · 30 min run · first short brick (ride + 10 min run) |
| 9–11 | Get race-ready | Open-water swims · ride at race effort · bricks every week · one practice of the full race order |
| 12 | Taper | Cut volume in half, keep a few short sharp efforts, rest, set out your gear |
Not sure where to start, or coming back from an injury? A coach can build this around your schedule. Our 1:1 coaching starts at $250/month and we coach plenty of first-timers.
Open-water swimming
For most first-timers the swim is the scary part, and open water is very different from a pool: no walls, no lines, other swimmers and murky water. The fix is simple: practise it before race day.
- Swim with a group or a coach. Never swim open water alone.
- Practise sighting: lift your eyes every 6–10 strokes to spot a buoy.
- Start at the back or side of your wave, and settle into your own pace.
- It's fine to breaststroke or float on your back to catch your breath.
We run in-person swim sessions across the GTA if you'd like a coach to walk you through it.
Race day
- Arrive early. Pick up your package, get body-marked and set up transition with time to spare.
- Set up transition simply: bike racked, helmet open on your bars, shoes and race belt on a towel.
- Walk the transition: find "swim in", "bike out", "bike in" and "run out" before the start.
- Helmet on and buckled before you touch your bike, and kept on until it's racked again.
- Start easier than you think. Nobody wins their first race in the first five minutes.
